THE INTERIM JOINT MATRICULATION BOARD EXAMINATION (IJMB)
The interim joint matriculation board examination (IJMB) was set up by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1974 under status 5 of the Ahmadu Bello University law to run the interim joint matriculation board examination (IJMBE)as an alternative “A” level Examination, to students or candidate who may wish to seek undergraduate admission into Ahmadu Bello University and other universities. The interim joint matriculation board examination (IJMB) is a qualifying examination into Nigeria and other international Universities. It is conducted yearly essentially for Advanced level(A/L) subjects for students already admitted by colleges affiliated to the board for the purpose of the examinations.
In addition, two ordinary level(O/L) subjects (English and Mathematics) are also offered for students who may be deficient in these two (O/L) subjects. The various subjects offered at the IJMB are listed in appendix1.2, Each candidate registered for the IJMB is expected to offer three subjects at the Advanced level; and where the need arise one or both the ordinary level subjects. The IJMB syllabus is subject to review in order to correspond to global changes. The governing board of the IJMB approved the review of the syllabus, which was last reviewed in 2021. The review exercise was conducted in phases, in active collaboration with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC). Participants were drawn IJMB Affiliated Institutions, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Examiners of the various subjects/ papers. The IJMB syllabus is designed to be covered in twelve (12) months.

1.2 ADMISSION ENTRY REQUIREMENT:
Admission into the IJMB programme requires at least five (5) O/L credit passes including Mathematics and English Language. These five subjects include three ‘A’ level course/ subjects which the students wish to offer. In addition, awaiting results (SSCE) is also allowed.
1.3 PRE-MOCK AND MOCK EXAMINATIONS
At the end of the first semester comes the pre – mock examination to TEST students in their chosen subjects and to further prepare them for the mock examination. Mock examination is conducted at the end of the second semester lecture to further test students in their respective subjects area and to prepare them for the final ?IJMB exams. The Pre-mock examinations together with class attendance from students continuous assessment (C) as may be required by the IJMB Board.
1.4 IJMB TEACHING AND EXAMINATIONS:
Teaching on the IJMB programme is guided by the IJMBE syllabus and the content of the syllabus cover university 100 level syllabus and above which must be taught for a minimum of 12 months. Strict adherence of the IJMBE calendar of activities is ensured through documentation of candidates’ registration of the institutions and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
1.5 IJMB EXAMINATION
Examinations are conducted and supervised by the ABU IJMB Board in every February. All dully registered candidates are eligible to sit for the weeks exam. Thereafter, results are released by the ABU IJMB Board two months after the final exams.
1.6 COMPONENTS OR IJMB EXAMINATIONS
The IJMB examination consists of:
- CONTINOUS ASSESSMENT (C.A)
This form 20% of the total marks and it comprises of the following:
- Class attendance
- Assignments
- Tests
- End of semester examinations
- Scores for practical. Etc
- EXAMINATION
This comprises of 8% of two or three written examination papers (Objective, Essay, Practical) as defined by the subject syllabus. Details of examination subjects are contained in the syllabus.
- To obtain a grade, candidate must have C.A and examination component.
1.7 THE IJMB EXAMINATION GRADING SYSTEM

Grade A – E are considered as pass grades while grade ‘F’ is a failed grade. The total grade point for a candidate is the cumulative total for the three A-level subjects attempted. Candidates are entitled to bonus of one point, if they pass all the three A – level subjects with at least ‘E’ grade.
1.8 APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION THROUGH DIRECT ENTRY
After the IJMB examinations, successful candidates who have written the exams and have received their results shall go ahead to obtain university JAMB Direct Entry Form from any JAMB offices or agents nationwide to apply to university and for course of their choice.
In applying for Direct Entry admission into any university candidate must take the following into consideration:
- University Catchment Areas:- Every Public University in Nigeria have their catchment areas. Those whose states fall within the Catchment areas have greater chances for gaining admissions. Students should consult JAMB Direct Entry Brochure for list of university and their catchment areas.
- Choice of Course:- Before making a choices of university, candidate must check to ensure that the institution of their choice offer the course in which they are applying for admissions.
- Grade Point:-Candidates must also confirm the acceptance grade points for the course they are applying for admissions.
- Post Direct Entry (DE) Examinations:- Applicants should also confirm if the institution of his/ her choice does Post Direct Entry Examination. She/he should confirm the date, Time and Venue and general examination requirements.
- Post IJMB Counseling Services:- Free Counseling services are available for deserving IJMB students on the steps to take in applying for admissions through Direct Entry with IJMB certificates/ Result.
1.9 UNIVERSITIES THAT ACCEPT IJMB CERTIFICATE:
Virtually all the Nigerian Universities (government and private owned) accept IJMB results. The number is gradually increasing as a result of increasing awareness on the relevance of the IJMB.

Interim Joint Admission Board (IJMB)
The Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) was set up in 1974, by the Federal Government under the statutes of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Law to run the Interim Joint Admission Board Examination (IJMB) as an alternative to Advanced Level Examination for students or candidates who may wish to seek for undergraduates’ admission into Ahmadu Bello University and other Universities in Nigeria and Abroad. The programme was envisaged as a bridge after secondary school education to prepare candidates academically, mentally and socially for challenges of university education.
The IJMB examination is based on an approved IJMB syllabus produced by harmonizing the contents of the syllabus of the former Higher School Certificate (HSC), London GCE, Cambridge Advanced Level examination and 100 level curriculum of the Nigerian universities.
IJMB is a qualifying examination conducted yearly essentially on advanced level subjects for admission into Nigerian universities and foreign universities into 200 level. Candidates for the IJMB examination are presented through the affiliated institutions which is saddled with the responsibilities of providing teaching and training facilities for the candidates. Currently there are over 53 affiliated centers across the country including Calvary Polytechnic, Owa-Oyibu, Delta State.
Entry Qualification into The IJMB Programme
Candidates seeking for admission into the programme must possess a minimum of five (5) credits at O’ level from either WAEC, NECO or NABTEB at not more than two sittings which must include 3 relevant subjects in addition to Mathematics and English Language.

To provide direct entry for students into 200 Level in Nigerian Universities after a candidate must have passed the exam of the Inteim Joint Matriculation Board

IJMB Teaching and Examination
Teaching of IJMB programmed is solely guided by a compiled syllabus issued by ABU Zaria and the contents of the syllabus cover 100 level university and some part of 200 level syllabus which must be covered within a minimum of 12 calendar months. The centre strictly adhered to the IJMB academic calendar. At the end of the programme the students will be enrolled with the IJMB secretariat at ABU Zaria for their final A ‘level examination. No candidate will be presented for IJMB examination before the twelve month (12) duration. The IJMB examination is moderated by the JAMB appointed moderators selected from different universities across the country. The supervisors are appointed by the IJMB office which comprises of senior academic officers from the affiliated institutions and ABU Zaria.
Nature of IJMB Examination
The IJMB secretariat stipulates that each candidate registering for the IJMB must offer (3) combinable subjects at the advanced level relevant to their proposed of study
Continuous Assessment (CA) and IJMB Examination
The examination consists of:
- All IJMB students must have a Continuous Assessment (CA) which is 20% and it comprises of class attendance, assignments, test, end of semester examinations scores for practical’s.
- The final IJMB examination is made up of 80% comprising of two or three written examination papers (Multiple Choice or CBT, essay and practical) as stipulated in the IJMB syllabus. The detail explanation of each subject and its examination procedure are contained in the syllabus
- To qualify in the final IJMB examination, the student must have both complete (CA)
and write the final examination.
